Tennessee

Governor

Governor Bill Haslam (R)

Bill Haslam

Gov. Haslam consistently supports the expansion of charter schools though his efforts have not helped expand the law to permit all partnerships. He recently enacted a policy allowing the state board of education to overturn unwarranted local district denials of charters. Haslam continually supports vouchers, most recently he supported a bill that would introduce the system to TN low-income families. The governor also proposed to allow teachers the ability to leave off TNReady assessment scores in their evaluations: “Tennessee students are showing historic progress. The state made adjustments to teacher evaluation and accountability last year to account for the transition to an improved assessment fully aligned with Tennessee standards, which we know has involved a tremendous amount of work on the part of our educators.”
