Governor Dennis Daugaard (R)

Dennis Daugaard

Gov. Daugaard signed into law South Dakota’s first private school choice bill in 2016, whereby low-income students will be able to attend private schools through a tax credit scholarship program. Gov. Daugaard signed a bill (SB 159) that created state subsidized scholarships for private and parochial schools. Gov. Daugaard signed into law a strong teacher evaluation system that effectively ends traditional tenure. The governor has not been vocal on the issue of charter schools.
