Rhode Island

Governor

Governor Gina Raimondo (D)

Gina Raimondo

Governor Raimondo signed a new law expanding existing charter schools but putting restrictions on new ones, as a compromise to both sides. She opposes expanding authorization to city or town councils. Gov. Raimondo also proposed a change to the funding of schools whereby school districts would be able to hold onto $350 per student every time a child chooses to attend a charter school, in an attempt to “level the playing field.” Raimondo supports school choice among public schools only and does not believe teachers should be evaluated every year and that any evaluation done should be tied to professional development efforts.
