Governor

Governor Susana Martinez (R)

Susana Martinez

Gov. Susana Martinez strongly supports charter schools, and isn’t shy of noting that seven of the state’s 10 top-performing high schools are charters. She instituted a teacher evaluation system where a full 50 percent is based on the academic improvement of students; a 15 percent drop in teacher absences was attributed to the implementation of this system. Gov. Martinez says “we must bring excellent teachers into our classrooms and we must keep them there. Gov. Martinez supports limited ”scholarships” for special-needs students and advocating instead for a tax credit-funded school choice scholarship program.
