American Education: The Next 15 Years

A national reform conference
Wednesday, October 28, 1998
8:30 – 5:00
The Four Seasons Hotel
Washington, DC

Fifteen years ago this spring, in April of 1983, the National Commission on Excellence in Education released a shocking and historic evaluation of the condition of American education. A Nation at Risk declared that "the educational foundations of our society are presently being eroded by a rising tide of mediocrity that threatens our very future as a Nation and a people." This past April 3, about thirty of the nation's most prominent reformers, business leaders and policymakers convened in Washington to explore how far we've come since the '83 shot across the bow. The evidence, and thus the conclusion, was clear: we're a nation Still at risk.

What can we do during the next fifteen years to regain the post-Sputnik educational excellence that so captured and motivated a generation? Mixing party lines, ideologies and otherwise typical lines of cultural demarcation, the Center for Education Reform is pleased to hold this pathbreaking educational event on the eve of its own special 5th anniversary. You will hear from the nation's leading grass roots activists, choice and charter schools' authorities, and a host of others.
