Charter School Funding

Following the Money

Charter schools that are authorized by agencies other than local districts or that are their own local education agency (LEAs) receive more funding than charter schools that are not. School districts shortchange charter schools when passing on federal and state funding, by deducting administrative fees or controlling special education and other federal program dollars. If a charter school is an LEA, it will have more autonomy and ultimately will receive funding that more closely resembles conventional schools. For more information, see Why Charter Schools Should Be Their Own LEA.
